John Taylor was born in London in 1937. Originally destined for a carreer in music, he studied piano, timpani and double bass at the Royal Academy of Music. His first degree, a B.A. at University of Reading incorporated music and economics. He then became a professional jazz musician, but discovered that economics was more lurative. He became a teacher of English as a Foreign Language while studying at the London School of Economics, Studies at LSE led to an MSc.(Econ.) and involved research and ultimately a post in Norway. In Norway, he lectured in Local Government and later engaged in further research at Odense University in Denmark. But the mountains beckoned and he returned to take up a position at a country planning office in western Norway. He return to Oslo to a new teaching post this time in statistics and computing. His familiarity with economics and local government resulted in commissions for profreading and translation for government departments, research institutions and local authorities something which had occupied his spare time from 1973. This became a full-time occupation in 1989, one that enables a seasonal migration of work place to his summer cottage in the forests of eastern Norway. He is also a court interpreter and translator for Oslo City justices and the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration. He still turns an acceptable blues on the piano!
