 About the book...

Butan, the last Shangrila, which opened itself very late and cautiously, maintains its culture and ways of life against not only the onslaught of science and technology but also the two most dynamic and fast emerging centres of power—India and China. Bhutan is unique in several respects. A study of its socio-political institutions and development strategy is rewarding in many ways. It is, therefore, desirable to know and understand Bhutan's society, culture, way of life, economy, polity and process of modernization.
The kingdom of Bhutan is facing multi-dimensional problems in modern times. Process of social change, development, modernization, national identity and integration are posing serious challenges to the ruling elite. The major objectives of the present volume is to enquire into the dynamics of various problems that Bhutan is encountering and the strategies that the elite has adopted to deal with them.
