Economic
History has presently become a subject of great interest
among scholars. This books, a unique collection of
scholarly articles, presents a general survey of the
economic history of Orissa from the earliest times
to the end of the British rule. It attempts to provide,
at one place, well known contributions from distinguished
scholars and combines ther various ways of approaches
and points of emphasis in their different areas of
specialization. The book presents current trends as
well as long-term themes of the economic history of
Orissa and thus tries to serve the need of the academic
community in bringing about a new arientation in the

Dr.
Nihar Ranjan Patnaik (1957), the editor of
this volums, had his M. A. in first class from the Utkal
University in 1977. Then he joined the Orissa Educational
Service as a Lecturer in History and has served in that
capacity in different Government Colleges of Orissa
for nearly twenty years. Meanwhile he erned his M. Phil.
(1982), Ph. D.(1987) and D. Litt. (1993) degrees from
the Utkal University.
Dr. Patnaik has written
extensively. To his credit are five original works:
Social History of Nineteenth Century Orissa; history
and Culture of Khond Tribes; Lakshman Naik--- A Study
in tribal Patriotism; Biplabi Nirmal Munda; and
Swadhinata Andolanare Odissara Adibasi 'O' Lakshman
Naik. He has also edited a highly applauded book,
the religious History of Orissa. He is the co-author
of world History; History of Ancient India; history
of Medieval India; History of Modern India; Social and
Cultural History of India; History of Freedom Movement
in India and the national Integration; and History of
Europe. At Present Dr. Patnaik is working on a new project,
freedom Struggle and the Tribals of Orissa, on a fellowship
from the Indian Council of Historical Research, New
Delhi. A number of his research articles have been published
in various research books and journals, newspapers and
magazines. He has participated in a number of national
and State level seminars, symposia and confrences. he
has held the post of the 'Joint Secretary' of the Orissa
History Congress for three terms. He is a recipient
of Gajapati Samman for his academic distionctions.
At present Dr. Patnaik is working as Reader and Head
of the Department of History, Government Women's College,
Puri, Orissa.
