Like
other living creatures, human beings live in, depend
on and influence the environment. Our rapidly expanding
technological civilization creates new demands on
all aspects of environment. As more people live today
than have ever lived on the earth at one time, they
are using more resources more rapidly than any civilization
has used before. They also produce more wastes more
rapidly than any previous civilization. The problem
of pollution and wastes did not assume disturbing
proportions till the 19th century when the Industrial
Revolution took place which resulted in increasingly
greater production and consumption, and proportionate
increase in pollution of water, land, air and environmental
peace affeciting natural resources and quality of
life adversely.
It is important to know the true nature of present
and future dangers, and not be alarmed or panicked
by inexact knowledge. This book, therefore, aims at
providing a detailed knowledge of pollution of our
ecosystem and suggests possible ways for its prevention.
It is hoped that this book will benefit each and every
member of the society in familiarising himself with
this great menace of contemporary times, Viz, pollution
of our ecosystem.
