 About the book...

India is a vast country with diverse physiographic characteristics. Due to pressure of pupulation and on-going technological changes, the enviornmental condition in India is degrading fast enough to raise alarm for the environmentalists and planners. Each day more and more wood is removed from our forests; thousands of tons of toxic effluents are poured into rivers and lakes; millions of vehicles emit pollutants into the atmosphere; and the increase in the population pressure is continuing, all resulting in the deterioration of our environment and pushing it further to the verge of total collapse. This books is an attempt to deal with the problems of degradation of our fragile environment and the resulting crisis. It covers topics like?Forests and their Degradation; Rare and Threatened Species; Degradation due to Accelerated Erosion; Degradation due to Wastelands; Effects of Desertification; Effects of Air Pollution; Bhopal Gas Tragedy; Effects of Water Pollution; Industrial Wastes and Fish Life; Effects of Noise Pollution; Problems of Solid Wastes; Eutrophication of Wetlands; Degradation due to Quarrying Activities; Effects of Shifting Cultivation; Effects of Slope Failure in the Himalaya; The Eucalyptus Controversy; Urbanization and the Environment; The Aravalli Hills and their Conservation; and The Western Ghats and their Conservation.
