Pangi
Valley-a remote, snow-bound world beyond civilisation-is
located in the midHimalayan region known as Pangi
range. Due to geographical conditions the valley remains
cut-off from the rest of the world for more than six
months in a year. Heavy snowfall and semi-arctic climate
makes the living very tough in the valley. The access
to the valley mainly is from Sach pass, Cheni pass
or through Jammu and Kashmir: In all these treks a
walk of 30-50 kms takes you to Pangi. This beautiful
valley is sandwiched between Pir Panjal and Zanskar
ranges. River Chandrabhaga flows through it. Pangi
is a land of wonders, remarkable in its rugged grandeur,
austere and exquisite beauty, it is a trekker's paradise.
It holds limitless charm and ultimate challenges for
adventurous people. It has many unknown destinations,
many unsealed peaks and many breath-taking trek routes.
It is a place where myth is history and mystery is
reality. The valley echoes with tales of wonder and
supernatural. This book is a detailed account of the
place and the life of people living there. The life
of Pangwals is a story of survival, of spirit of human
struggle against the forces of nature. The lifestyle
of Pangwals, their customs, traditions, institutions,
folk dances and folk songs have been studied in this
book. The book covers various aspects of Pangi Valley
and its people such as: Introduction; Historical Background;
Inhabitants' Culture, Tradition and lifestyle; Treasure
of Pangi; Sub-Valleys: Places of Interest; Gateways
to the Valley; Trek Routes in the Valley; Winters
in the Snow-Bound Valley; Fairs and Festivals; Employees:
The Frustrated Lot; Tribal Development Policy; The
Changing Scenario; Ecological Impact Assessment.
