 About the book...

This book on Inventory of Forest Resources for Sustainable Management and Biodiversity Conservation is likely to prove as a basic tool to the forest managers, policy-makers and other NTFP-based entrepreneurs to accept the challenge of NTFP-oriented need-based Sustainable Forest Management as most of the answers to all possible queries regarding places of availability, utilization and domestication of need-based NTFP species would be obtainable from the book for making an appropriate choice of forest species for afforestration/domestication.
Globally the forest management has been traditionally rested in wood while the high rate of felling trees has caused depletion of forests in meeting the needs of the people. It has been found during the current decade that NTFPs are the only saviour to socio-economic development. The old tradition of leasing forest areas in the name of MFP/medicinal plants has also resulted in an environmental holocaust. Therefore, all those who wish to switch over from timber-dominated management of NTFP-oriented need-based Sustainable Forest Management are not prepared to accept the challenge, due to sheer lack of knowledge.
Therefore, the consultation of several lists given in Appendices 1 and 2 of this book is likely to be the first step in making the appropriate choice of species for afforestation on forest and private lands. This book should prove a boon not only to all the State Forest Departments in India but in other countries also, as edapho-climatic conditions of all the species have been portrayed in this book, while recommendations have been made for an overall forest development considering the present scenario in sections 1 to 8 of the text.
The 26-member ?World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development? (WCFSD) founded in 1995 and the 15-Nation Forest Security Council (F-15) formed with an International Forest ombudsman, may also usefully consult this book for protection of Forest Wealth and Sustainable Development.
