Kumaun
region of the Himalaya forms a part of the U.P. State.
Its entire tract is mountainous with low Siwalik hills
in the south and the gigantic main Himalayan mountain
wall in the north. This beautiful hilly region is
made up of administrative districts of Nainital, Almora
and Pithoragarh. The mountains are clothed with dense
forests ranging from sal forests in the south to alpine
meadows just below the snowline in the north. Kumaun
is a land of snow-clad mountain peaks, fast-flowing
waters, placid lakes, terraced fields clinging to
steep mountain slopes and small villages. This book
attempts to present in a concise from the land and
people of Kumaun. It deals with regional geography,
climate, soils, rivers, lakes and glaciers, geology,
natural vegetation and forests, wildlife and sanctuaries,
history, people and culture, economy, environmental
degradation, and places of interest in Kumaun. The
book will be a handy reference guide on the land and
people of Kumaun.
