 About the book...

The present study describes the land and people of lahaul-spiti, a remote district of Himachal Pradesh. It is a multi-disciplinary study and the subject has been dealt with chronologically, in order to present an overall picture of this beautiful and unique region of the Himalayas. What are their languages, religions, customs and rituals? What are the moral values that go with their life style? What is their history past and present; and what has been their economic development through the years? What has been the impact of modern system of communication, educational and medical facilities, and the coming of electricity to the region. These are some of the relevent topics that have been studied in this book. A valuable addition to the meagre literature on Himalayan people which should be of interest to students of anthropology, sociology and history, besides tourists and mountaineers.
