Mountains
of India, whose magnificent sights have enthralled
countless men and women over the ages, have inspired
many to turn their gaze inwards in search of their
true self. They also hold a special significance in
the cultural ethos of India. Besides the Himalayas
in the north, there are several mountain ranges criss-crossing
the rest of India. These are the Aravallis, the Vindhyas,
the Satpuras, the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats.
They hold great reserves of natural resources and
are vital to the economy of India.
Written and compiled by India?s most eminent mountaineer
Captain M.S. Kohli, who in the early seventies pioneered
the concept of Himalayan trekking on global basis
from the Air India platform, the book serves as a
guidebook for an individual who want to use the mountains
of India for pleasure or spiritual fulfillment, or
to feel the sheer thrill of adventure. From his unique
position of being associated with the Himalayas and
other mountain ranges of India, and their different
aspects of adventure, tourism and environmental conservation,
Captain Kohli has brought out a very special book
on this unique gift of nature to India.
This book explores the tourism aspects of the ?Mountains
of India? in general and provides useable information
on their geography, pilgrimage centres, hill stations
and adventure options available to an individual.
Finally it draws attention to the need for conservation
of their delicate ecosystem for future generations.
It is extremely rare to find such a wealth of information
in one volume, which makes this book unique.

Internationally
renowned climber, Captain Mohan Singh Kohli
led the historic Indian Everest Expedition 1965 which
put nine men on the summit, a world record which India
held for 17 years. He belongs to the exclusive band
of three climbers who in 1962 survived six consecutive
days in the death zone of Everest, above 26,000 feet,
which included 65 traumatic hours between 27,650 feet
and 28,650 feet in raging blizzards, most of the time
without oxygen. Captain Kohli has 14 major expeditions
to his credit. These include his leadership of Indian
Navy?s challenging ascent of Nanda Kot in 1959, India?s
most dramatic ascent of Annapurna III in 1961 and world?s
longest and most unusual expedition?a highly sensitive
Indo-American mission to Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot from
1965 to 1967.
Captain Kohli has had a distinguished and spectacular
career spanning the Indian Navy (Captain), the ITB Police
(Advisor) and Air India (Regional Director). He was
responsible for developing the ITBP into a formidable
mountaineering organisation. In 1971, on joining Air
India, he conceived and poineered the brand new segment
of Himalayan Tourism. In 1977 he collaborated with Sir
Edmund Hillary in ?From the Ocean to the Sky Jet-Boat
Expedition? up the Ganges which heralded white water
rafting in India. In 1984, he introduced aero sports
in India by organising the first International Hang-Gliding
Rally. He is also the architect of congresses and conventions,
tourist charters, luxury sea-cruises in the Indian ocean
and tourism to Lakshadweep and Andaman islands.
He was born at Haripur on December 11, 1931 in the mountainous
Hazara district of NWFP. He was President of the Indian
Mountaineering Foundation from 1989 to 1993. On October
14, 1989, in consultation with Sir Edmund Hillary and
other Himalayan legends, he founded the Himalayan Environment
Trust to save the Himalayas for future generations.
Mohan Kohli is recipient of Padma Bhushan, Arjuna Award,
Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, IMF Gold Medal, Order of the
Khalsa and Most Distinguished Citizen of Delhi Award.
He advised the governments of Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan
and Malaysia on adventure sports and tourism. Captain
Kohli enjoyed the rare privilege of addressing Members
of both the Houses of Indian Parliament.
