Ever since its
discovery as the highest peak in the world, Mount
Everest is regar-ded the ultimate goal of
mountaineers from all over the world. In 1953, the
maiden ascent of Everest by Tenzing Norgay, along
with Edmund Hillary, elec-trified the entire nation.
Twelve years later, the Indian Everest Expedition
1965 set up a world record by putting nine climbers
on the summit, catapulting India to become the
fourth nation in the world to climb Everest.
Till the middle of 2006, 107 Indians have stood on
the summit of Everest; one of the first two persons
to reach the summit is an Indian; the first man to
climb Everest twice is an Indian; the first woman to
climb Everest twice is also an Indian. And the three
climbers, who hold the world record of spending
three nights at about 28,000 feet, are also Indians.
The growth and development of mountain-eering and
adventure sports in India is closely associated with
numerous Indian ascents of Everest.
Captain Kohli has superbly chronicled all gallant
Indian ascents till the middle of 2006. This volume
will find a pride of place in the libraries of
schools, colleges and corporates to inspire millions
of our youth to scale the highest peaks of
achievement in their chosen fields.

Captain Kohli was leader of the first successful
Indian expedition to Everest in 1965 that put a record-breaking nine
climbers atop the peak. This spectacular success made India dance. To
demons-trate the nation's gratitude and appre-ciation, the Prime Minister
Gulzarilal Nanda and several Cabinet Ministers received the returning team
at the airport. On 8 Sept. 1965, Captain Kohli received the rare honour of
addressing Members of both the Houses of the Indian Parlia-ment in the
Central Hall. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi described the feat as one of the
six major achievements of India after independence.
A living legend of the Himalayas, Captain Kohli is one of the three men in
the world who hold the record of spending three nights at 28,000 ft in the
death zone of Everest, in 1962. During his long tenure of 14 years, from
1979 to 1993, as Vice President and President of the Indian Mountaineering
Foundation, he organi-sed a mixed team to Everest in 1984 which saw the
first Indian woman Bachendri Pal on the summit; and an all women team to
Everest in 1993 which catapulted Santosh Yadav to become the first woman in
the world to climb Everest twice. As Advisor to the Indo-Tibetan Border
Police, from 1991 to 1996, the ITB Police climbed Everest from both sides.
Captain Kohli has had a spectacular career in the Indian Navy, the ITB
Police and Air India. He made an invaluable contribution to India and other
Himalayan countries by founding the brand new segment of Himalayan Tourism.
Among the numerous honours he has received are the Padma Bhushan, the Arjuna
Award, the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the IMF Gold Medal. He is author of
26 books.
