At
present, when India is heading towards a liberal and
market oriented economy, public enterprises will not
only have to improve their capability for continuous
upgradation of indigenous technology and for absorption
and adaptation of imported technology, but also they
will have to use R&D as a major tool for improving
competitiveness and efficiency. In this context, this
book is an humble attempt for initiating systematic
and analytical study of R&D in PEs from the point
of commerce and management. The book presents a comprehensive
and critical assessment of the progress of R&D
in PEs and of its contribution in achieving techno-economic
objectives including export promotion, import substitution,
improved usage of raw materials, product development
and diversification, energy conservation, improved
manufacturing processes and upgradation of technology.
The Basic approach of the book is general description
accompanied by specificanalyses founded on select
case studies. Efforts have also been made to identify
the thrust areas of R&D keeping in view the development
in the field of R&D in other Countries and the
futuristic prospects and challenges anticipated in
India industries. Finally, the book presents a detailed
recommendatory framework for ensuring a well designed
and integrated R&D policy and strategy in Indian
industry in general and in PEs in particular. This
work will fill up the gaps in information data bank
relating to R&D in PEs.
