 About the book...

The book contains 55 excellent papers from experts from several countries like Russia, India, China, Germany, Canada and Central Asia. Efforts have been made to cover all the aspects of the plant with latest information on the subject. The book has been divided into 12 sections covering various aspects. The first section on Distribution & Taxonomy deals with the taxonomic relationships of seabuckthorn. Second section on Flowering and Embryology relates to flowering and embryology. Third section deals with experiences of introduction of seabuckthorn in a new region, and on the breeding, including mutagenesis breeding. Fourth section on Genetics deals with karyotypic analysis, and the development of seedless plants. Next section deals with tolerance of seabuckthorn to drought as well as frost conditions, besides nitrogen fixation and abscission. The section on Propagation describes methodologies of seabuckthorn nurseries. Next section discusses the cultivation technologies. The section on Diseases, Pests & Control Measures deals with fungal diseases and pest problems and their control methods. Next section deals with environmental conservation. The section on Harvesting Technologies, deals with difficulties in fruit harvesting & technologies and machines developed for fruit harvesting. Section on Processing Technologies include papers on processing of fruit for juice & oil, and flour production and on tea developed from seabuckthorn leaves. Last section relates to overall research on seabuckthorn in various countries and on the invasive characteristics of seabuckthorn and its control measures.
The book will prove very useful to the researchers, environmentalists, herbal medicine industry, policy-makers and all those interested in knowing more about this multipurpose wonder plant.

He has been working on seabuckthorn since 1993 and has travelled widely in remote Indian Himalayas and worked on various aspects like genetic diversity & improvement, introduction of exotic forms, propagation, cultivation and management of seabuckthorn. He is also instrumental in initiating research on clinical and experimental studies and processing of various health products in his university and other institutions. Presently, he is involved in a number of multi-institutional research projects on seabuckthorn and has developed collaboration with other countries. He is credited with several papers on seabuckthorn in reputed international and national journals. He has also edited three books on seabuckthorn in association with several international experts.
Dr. Virendra Singh has been elected Coordinator (South Asia) of International Centre for Research & Training on Seabuckthorn, Beijing. He was also assigned the responsibility with three other experts, for writing the Constitution of International Seabuckthorn Association, of which, he has been appointed founding member of Board of Directors. In order to enhance the international collaboration and sensitize the Indian scientists, policy-makers and private companies, Dr. Singh, along with his team, organized the 6th International Workshop on Seabuckthorn in February 2001, at New Delhi. Dr. Singh has been elected Secretary, Indian Seabuckthorn Association. He has also been elected in the International Committee of World Congress on Seabuckthorn, to be held in September 2003, at Berlin. He is widely travelled and visited several countries of Europe and Asia.
