 About the book...

Warmly nestled in the heart of the Eastern Himalayas, the state of Sikkim constitutes one of the most strategic and naturally endowed states in the country. Centuries old religious political history of Sikkim has remained an unexplored source of civilization in and around the Kanchenjunga. One can lay hands on a very few published literature. A huge unwritten collection of historical facts and anecdotes are fast eroding and vanishing. This volume is a humble but a conscious effort in collecting, consserving and disseminating various facets of events and progress that have characterized contemporary sikkim.
This collection of speeches by pawan chamling, ChiefMinister of sikkim constitutes a significant aspect of history. In them, one finds the situational contexts, sociocultural milieu, development discourse and political environment. Sikkim democratic front led government headed by Pawan Chamling came to power at a very critical jucture in the history of modern Sikkim. Therefore, his speeches and deliberations do reflect his inner strength as a courageous and concerned human being and his outreach as a mass-based political leader.
These speeches delivered on varied occasions and themes convincingly tell us the saga of how emotionally and comprehensively Sikkim has integrated into the Indian Union. Sikkim is a happening state today. Despite severe geographical constraints and locational disadvantages, it has hit the national debate and discourse for all positive reasons and affirmative actions. These speeches do underscore and convey the message of a strong urge and ability of Sikkim and the Sikkimese people to play a major role in the nation-building process.

 About the author...

Pawan Chamling, born 22 sept. 1950 has been the Chief Minister of Sikkim since December 1994. Active in social works from his early teens, his political journey had its formal beginning in 1977 as the Vice-President of Sikkim Prajatantra Congress. In 1982, he was elected unopposed as President of Yangang Gram Panchayat. In 1985, he was elected as a Member of Sikkim Legislative Assembly from Damthang and became the Chairman of Sikkim Distilleries. In 1989 election, he was re-elected with a record 96.6% of total vote cast. He became a Cabinet Minister in the Sikkim Sangram Parishad Governmet.

A relentless worker for the poor and downtrodden, Pawan Chamling formed his own Sikkim Democratic front party on March 4, 1993 and initiated a statewide campaing against the autocratic rule of the then government. Widely hailed as the "dark horse" by the media, Chamling as the lone opposition MLA, created a history by searching for democracy with a lighted candle in his hand inside the State Assembly Hall on sept. 9, 1992. His party won Assembly election in 1994 and formed the popular "KHALI KHUTTE KO SARKAR" (Government of the bare-foot people).

In recognition to his tireless effort at emotional integration of Sikkimese people into the mainstream, he was awarded the coveted "BHARAT SHIROMANI AWARD". Also voted as the "Greenest Chief Minister of India" in a countrywide poll conducted by the Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi, Chamling has consistently and extensively contributed to the environmental conservation of the Eastern Himalayas.

A man of popular literature, Pawan Chamling has many volumes of poetry to his credit, Some of them already rendered into English and Hindi. He writes powerful poetry with consummate simplicity and revolutionary overtones on themes like human dignity and equality.
