Ladakh,
a barren and rainless area, is the most remote region
of India. It was virtually closed to the outside world
upto 1974, when it was opened to the tourists. The altitude
of the major inhabited areas in the region vary from
8,787 ft in Kargil to around 20,000 ft in Chang-Thang.
Ladakh has been the home of many cultures?the Dards,
the Mongols, the Tibeto-Burmans?all shut from the external
world. The area is full of amazing sights: strange gonpas
perched on soaring hilltops, barren landscapes splashed
with small but brilliant patches of green, and ancient
palaces clinging to sheer rock-walls. But most of all,
it is notable for its delightful, colourful and friendly
people. Its Buddhist monasteries are important for archaeological
reasons. The murals, texts and objects of worship housed
in Ladakhi monasteries testify to the close cultural
links that existed between this remote Buddhist stronghold
and the Buddhist centres in India. Tourism industry
in Ladakh is now emerging as an important source of
income. It is attracting many travellers, adventurers,
mountaineers and scholars from all over the world. The
main theme of this book is to study and analyse the
tourism industry and its potential in Ladakh. The book
also throws light on the impact of tourism on the economy,
environment, society and culture of this beautiful area.
