This book makes a micro-level study of voluntary agencies for women welfare treating voluntarism both as a idea, innate in man's being, and as a techique of social action comprising volitional and systematic endeavours at restoring social health.
Women welfare is not regraded as a matter of preventing eve-teasing, dowry deaths or similar crimes against women but deemed as a widerconcept encompassing their all-round development in all spheres of human activity. The book makes a historical survey of the status of women as determined or influenced, from time to time, by scriptural codes, social conventions, cultural traditions, political changes, economic and industrial development, constitutional provisions and humanistic ideas. It explores the changing nature and dimensions of voluntary action and delineates the organisation and working of four voluntary agencies Assciation for Social Health in India, Bharatiya Grameen Mahila Samiti, Nari Niketan, and Sewa Sadan, along with their ancillary units such as family counselling center short stay home for women, Working women Hostel, Nari Nirman, Art and craft centres, Creches, Balwadis and mahila Mandals. It examines the policies, programmes, strategies and financial viability of voluntary agencies talking in its gamut such aspects as the motivation and quality of leadership, internal squabbles, defunct schemes and programmes, procedural flaws and violations, relationship with district administration and state agencies, hinderances in voluntary social work, and so on. The book brings out the points of strength and weakness of voluntary agencies and suggests ways so that they may be able to cope with the new challenges in view of the changing roles and growing needs of women.

Dr. Usha Kapoor
has had a brilliant career throughtout. She did M.A. Political Science-1973, History-1975 and Public Administration-1977 winning laurels for herself. She was awarded Gold Medal for securing top position in M.A. (Public Administration) from Punjab University, Chandigarh. Her doctoral work on Voluntary Agencies for Women Welfare was hailed by one of her examiners as "a pilot study" in the field. A distinguished teacher, researcher and scholar having an academic standing of more than two dacades, Dr. Usha Koopr has participated in seminars and symposia at state and national levels. She was a member, board of studies in public Administration and faculty of Art and social Sciences of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, for amny years. She is a resource person of Indira gandhi National Open University ( Jalandhar Study Centre) and All India Services Pre-examination training Centre for SC/ST. She is also a broadcaster of standing and has performed a number of programmes on radio and television. Dr. Usha Kapoor holds the position of a Reader in public Administration at Guru Nanak Dev University College, Jalandhar City.
